Dan Murphy

Biography

Mr. Murphy is a senior partner at Murphy Dolan Criminal Defence. He has extensive experience as a criminal trial lawyer and has both prosecuted and defended hundreds of criminal law cases throughout Ontario, Newfoundland, Labrador, and – most recently – Alberta.

In Newfoundland and Labrador, Mr. Murphy was the youngest partner at his firm Jewer Murphy & Griffin. While in Ontario, Mr. Murphy practiced exclusively as a criminal trial lawyer. Mr. Murphy has practiced for the last year in Red Deer as a prosecutor in one of the Alberta’s busiest jurisdictions.

Background

Mr. Murphy spent four years as a prosecutor in Newfoundland and Labrador, acting as the sole prosecutor on the Burin Peninsula where he gained a deep knowledge of criminal law.  Mr. Murphy transitioned this to defence work in Toronto and throughout Southwestern Ontario where he appeared at all levels of court, successfully defending people charged with offences ranging from common assault to attempted murder.

Mr. Murphy obtained a Juris Doctorate in Law from Osgoode University in 2010. He attended at The University of Western Ontario and obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree with honours in Political Science in 2004. Mr. Murphy was then awarded a full scholarship from The University of Western Ontario, and completed my Master’s degree in international Relations in 2008. Mr. Murphy joined Murphy Dolan as one of its founding partners in 2020.

Litigation Philosophy

I am a strong believer in the need for not only a strong advocate; but a need for transparency and mutual respect between a lawyer and his/her client.

Through my experience as both a prosecutor and defence lawyer, I understand intimately what is needed to successfully negotiate with prosecution offices and more importantly, what to do in the event such negotiations fail.

I have successfully assisted hundreds of clients through the court system in a transparent, respectful and knowledgeable manner in Toronto and throughout Ontario, and look very much forward to bringing that skill set to Murphy Dolan Criminal Defence.
